Swiss Charter Units
SENS International certifies the emission reductions achieved through the destruction of CFCs as Verified Emissions Reductions and places them on the voluntary market for climate protection certificates under the name of Swiss Charter Units (SCUs) for project refinancing. The SCUs are issued exclusively by a registry.
Swiss Charter Units represent greenhouse gas emission reductions. Projects which entitle the issue of SCUs do not concentrate only on climate protection, however, but bring with them ecological, social and economic added value. They are therefore designed for environmentally aware companies and private individuals who wish to combine climate protection with social commitment.
SCUs are traded in Swiss francs per ton CO2 equivalent (Fr./t CO2e). Because CFCs were excluded from the Kyoto Protocol on the reduction of greenhouse gases, projects aimed at recycling electronic waste containing CFCs cannot be submitted under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) as defined by the UNFCC within the framework of the protocol.
SENS International therefore sells the generated Swiss Charter Units on the voluntary market for climate protection certificates. The voluntary market is scarcely regulated and it is often difficult for the buyers of the certificates to assess whether the climate protection certificates actually live up to their promise. For this reason SENS International has developed the Swiss Charter, which sets high standards for project-based ecological, social and economic development impetuses.
SCUs, without exception, are only then issued if the emission reductions actually happen and are verified by an independent expert from a certification body (Designated Operational Entities, DOE). Greenhouse gas emission reductions must be real, permanent, measurable, additional, and independently verified.
Only a registry independent of both the project and SENS International is authorised to issue certificates. The SCUs are issued on the basis of an expert report from a DOE. The registry guarantees the purchaser that the emissions have actually been reduced and the certificates are unique.
