Swiss Charter and Emission Reduction Units
The Swiss Charter specifies the framework conditions for an area of climate protection which so far has been by and large disregarded: the recycling of CFC-containing appliances in emerging markets. The methodologies submitted under the Swiss Charter are undergoing double validation by independent experts and the emission reductions are verified. The generated climate certificates are issued by a registry as Swiss Charter Units.
The quality standard «Swiss Charter – Climate Protection by Recycling» developed by SENS International defines the ecological, social, economic and technological requirements for recycling electrical and electronic appliances, especially refrigeration appliances, in emerging markets. The Swiss Charter is aimed at recycling projects for the reduction of the highly potent and ozone layer damaging greenhouse gases CFCs.
SENS International certifies the emission reductions achieved through the destruction of CFCs as Verified Emissions Reductions (VER) and places them on the voluntary market for climate protection certificates under the name of Swiss Charter Units (SCUs) for project refinancing. The SCUs are issued exclusively by a registry.
All SENS International’s climate protection projects are implemented in terms of the Swiss Charter. Emission reductions which are certified as Swiss Charter Units and placed on the voluntary market have actually occurred in real terms. The foundation’s SCPI label guarantees this on the basis of reports from accredited, external and independent Designated Operational Entities (DOE).
