SENS International : CLIMATE PROTECTION BY RECYCLING

Uniqueness

SENS International is taking on responsibility for recycling CFC-containing waste in an environmentally sound manner, thereby creating a unique climate protection project. Refrigeration appliances undergo industrial processing, and the CFCs are completely destroyed. Thanks to the high global warming potential of the CFCs and the efficient recycling process, there is scarcely another project that achieves as much effective climate protection per franc spent as this one. The Swiss Charter specifies the framework conditions for climate protection, an area which has gone largely unheeded up to now.

The Swiss Climate Protection Initiative SCPI is particularly effective. Around 300,000 to 400,000 refrigeration appliances are recycled every year in a unique recycling plant. This means that a single project has the potential to cut around 400,000 to 600,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions every year.

The SCPI is the first climate protection project to tackle the problem of old refrigeration appliances containing CFCs in emerging nations. CFCs have been neglected in climate protection up to now because they are not included in the Kyoto Protocol for the reduction of greenhouse gases and therefore cannot be put forward as one of the Clean Development Mechanisms. But CFCs are particularly powerful greenhouse gases.

The very latest technologies are used in the processes applied by SCPI projects for the environmentally sound recycling of refrigeration appliances containing CFCs. Consequently, recycling and technological know-how will be transferred to emerging countries with the implementation of SCPI projects, and street collectors will receive support along the way to more professional recycling structures.

SCPI projects are implemented on an industrial scale, creating a wealth of employment in and around the plant, as well as in upstream businesses and services. SENS International sets the bar high for its project partners, and not just in this respect. Their projects have to generate added value ecologically, socially, economically and technologically, as envisaged by the «Swiss Charter – Climate Protection by Recycling».
